This course is designed to give linemen, electricians, technicians, and supervisors an in depth view of operating and maintaining underground electrical power systems. Emphasis is placed on safe handling and testing techniques of high voltage cables at the job site. Participants perform cable dc hi-potential testing and cable and fault locating in this hands-on course.

Safe work practices dealing with grounding and testing capacitive power cables are explained and followed during all phases of the class.

ELECTRICAL POWER CABLE
INSTALLATION, TESTING & MAINTENANCE

This course is designed to provide engineers, technicians, and supervisors the basic knowledge required to properly select or specify medium and low voltage power cables. Emphasis is placed on selection, application, installation, maintenance, safe handling and testing techniques of power cables. Participants analyze appropriate insulating and protective materials used for cable insulations, jackets and shielding. Moisture, soil, chemical, thermal, and physical environments that cable must endure and continue to provide reliable service are discussed. Benefits and danger of acceptance, maintenance, and proof testing of power cables are discussed. Safe work practices for dc hi-potential testing and cable fault locating are also covered. Classroom discussion covers the basic cable handling, maintenance and safety, and reduces cable damage caused by lack of knowledge or poor work practices. Participants are able to reduce system cost by properly selecting, installing and maintaining cable system

An intensive hands-on course where students learn the skills to make a variety of poly cable splices, connections and terminations. Emphasis is placed on the care that must be taken throughout any splicing operation or handling of poly cable to prevent accidents or damage to the cables. Approximately 70% of the class time is spent in hands-on laboratory sessions preparing and making splices, including vault splicing and Paper Insulated Lead Cable to poly cable connections.

PILC – SPLICING PAPER INSULATED LEAD CABLES

An intensive hands-on course where students learn the skills to make a variety of Paper Insulated Lead Cable (PILC) splices, connections and terminations. Emphasis is placed on the care that must be taken throughout any splicing operation or handling of PILC to prevent hot lead accidents or damage cables. Approximately 70% of the class time is spent in hands-on laboratory sessions preparing and making splices including vault splicing and PILC to poly cable connections.

Accurate detailed drawings showing each step of the process are provided to each student for future reference. Cable wiping is demonstrated.

FUNDAMENTALS of POWER QUALITY

Solving complex power quality problems requires both insight and expertise. This two-day class offers in-depth information on investigating and mitigating some of the most challenging power quality problems.

The first day you receive knowledge of power quality fundamentals developing the ability to immediately recognize power quality issues as they begin developing. The second day is devoted to equipment demonstration and testing techniques for analyzing cause and affect/effect of power quality issues.

Combining materials and exercise from power quality courses 705 and 707, this course is designed for the electric utility industry. This course addresses electricity supply system power quality. This two-day class provides basic information necessary to understand electricity supply system power quality issues and how these issues affect end-users (customers).

The first day participants receive knowledge of power quality fundamentals. Advanced problems and solutions are presented the second day.
